Ran Webber
Trompe L'Oeil water color paintings(figurative, geometric, sculptural)
Buffalo New York

Ran Webber has been painting for 45 years and shown in numerous

regional and national museum and gallery exhibitions. The ideology

of this still-life series entitled Resurrection and re-invention

is concerned with Immersion, Saturation, Dissolution and Re-invention of

the painted surface (technique emphasizing process), and, creating illusionistic

images that “fool the eye” by encouraging the perception of the image as appearing to move back and forth thru the broken and textured picture plane.

The “intention” is to break the “picture plane” by folding the image surface,

Then to “fool the eye” by juxtaposing illustionistic classical shadowing with actual surface shadows created by the surface folds. Majorly then, to create still-life imagery of geometric sculpture of ambiguous scale balanced serenely

within a ambiguous Universe.

The actual working process includes designing (drawing) the image

digitally, transferring that to paper and adding paint to the image which

then is taken to specific natural/historical location where it then is

immersed (baptized) and saturated in water; this establishes a unique

historical signature (place /time) for each piece. The saturated piece is then

crumpled, squeezed, folded and dried. Finally the image is painted(re-invented) in earnest with varying layers and washes. Lastly, shadows are painted. This whole self-evolving process allows for control of the dissolution and then for the resurrecting and re-inventing of the original idea (image). Various elements of the entire process are allowed or emphasized to read thru. My creative /historical (romantic) impulses are served, as well as, my desire for fun and adventure – this series is a visual document.   2003/2004
